Beach Benefits: The Perks of Oceanside Living

Spread the love

Historically, people who came down with sickness were often sent away on a holiday by the sea to improve their health. A lot of people believe that being in an uncrowded place, in contact with nature and the fresh sea breeze can do wonders for a person’s health. Now, these age-old beliefs are supported by numerous studies.

One of the most extensive studies was conducted by Lora Fleming, an epidemiologist from the University of Exeter, and her colleagues. The university’s European Centre for the Environment and Human Health began a project called “Blue Gym” where they study how natural water environments, such as the beach, can be used to promote health and wellbeing.

In one study, the researchers found that people are willing to pay more for accommodation on the basis of ocean views alone. Another British study, this time from the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry and involving 48 million people, revealed that people who lived closer to the coast reported better health.

But how exactly does living near the coast help your health? Is buying land in Armstrong Creek and similar places that are minutes away from the coast worth the investment?

Better sleep near the ocean

The best benefit of having easy access to or of living near the beach is the unlimited source of sea air. In nature, especially somewhere near a big body of water, there are oxygen atoms called negative ions that are beneficial to the human body. One benefit these ions provide is the ability to balance the autonomic nervous system, which then promotes deeper and more restful sleep.

Concentration and meditation made easy

In the middle of a bustling city, there’s rarely a time when it’s completely quiet. While some thrive in the hustle and bustle, many others fail to concentrate on what they need to do because of the noise. On the contrary, living near the ocean can mean peace and quiet. Many people find the sound of waves crashing on the shore soothing, which helps them meditate and concentrate. This puts them in a more relaxed state, which helps improve their overall mood and wellbeing.

Swimming in seawater has health benefits

If you live near the sea or it’s easy for you to make frequent trips near the beach, you’re probably getting more out of it than simple enjoyment. Seawater has significantly higher amounts of minerals that are great for aiding skin conditions and overall skin health. For example, magnesium-rich seawater can improve the skin’s moisture retention. The minerals in the salt itself help open pores, which prepares your skin for deeper cleansing.

The act of swimming in seawater may also improve blood circulation. Instead of simply going to your lower limbs, blood is pumped near the heart, towards your abdominal region.

The sea can reduce anxiety and stress levels

Unless you’re scared of big bodies of water, living near them can reduce your anxiety and lower your stress levels. This is because life near the coast is usually more laid back.  The views of the ocean and the overall coastal ambience are calming, which can translate to improved mood. As a result, anxiety and stress levels are lower and you won’t experience the negative effects associated with these conditions, such as difficulty in sleeping, panic attacks, and fatigue.

The beach is commonly associated with relaxation. So, if you want its benefits and the feeling of endless vacation, you have to take every opportunity to visit or live near the beach.
